Parasite Control at Allegheny Veterinary Services in Elkins, WV

Flea, Tick, and Worm Elimination and Prevention Medications

At Allegheny Veterinary Services in Elkins, WV, we take parasite control very seriously. Parasites are responsible for destroying the health of our patients by extracting their vital nutrients, spreading diseases, and sucking the life right from their bodies. Parasites feed off of the body of their hosts and cause damage to the skin, tissues, and organs. Some live inside of the body, while others live outside -and most are highly contagious and spread easily from animal-to-animal and from animal-to-human. We do not tolerate parasites. A wide range of parasites may affect cats, dogs, reptiles, birds, and other patients in our area, including:

  • Fleas
  • Ticks
  • Roundworms
  • Heartworms
  • Pinworms
  • Tapeworms
  • Hookworms
  • Coccidia
  • Giardia
  • Whipworms
  • Ear Mites
  • Scabies
  • Lice

Parasites Can Spread to Human Household Members

It is important to remember that these parasites are more than an annoyance and danger for your companion animal. Many parasites are zoonotic (they can spread to and infest humans, as well). If a pet has been diagnosed with an internal or external parasitic infection that is known to be zoonotic, all household members should be tested for infestation by their family doctor and treated, if applicable. Roundworm infestations can lead to blindness in children. Aside from the serious health issues that these parasites cause, roundworm eggs can persist for at least a decade in the soil where an infected animal defecates. Many other parasites pose significant risks to humans, as well.

Fecal Stool Sample Testing for Internal Parasites

Due to the significant discomfort and detrimental health effects of internal parasites on the lives of all of your loved ones, it is critically important that our staff members regularly test fresh fecal samples from all of your pets. The samples should be collected, thoroughly sealed in an airtight plastic container, double-bagged, and refrigerated immediately. Bring the sample in to our office. We will evaluate the sample and contact you to recommend the most appropriate treatment (if applicable).

Medications for Internal & External Parasites: Dewormer, Flea and Tick

Online Pharmacy

We will discuss the properties of the various treatment options with you and help you to select the best medication to treat your pet. With regular treatments, parasites can be controlled -and most can be prevented from establishing a home in or on your pet’s body. Ask us about preventive spot treatments and a regular de-worming schedule for all cats and dogs. It must be assumed that all puppies and kittens are born with internal parasites. Worm infections are often fatal for young and weak animals. Some of the medications that we keep in stock include:
