Regenerative Laser Therapy
Regenerative laser therapy or photobiomodulation (PBM) is a non-painful light energy treatment that targets tissue and results in decreased inflammation, decreased pain, and accelerated healing. Regenerative laser therapy can effectively reduce pain and inflammation associated with a variety of acute and chronic conditions.
Our state-of-the-art Class IV laser offers customized protocols based on the condition, patient size, patient weight, and coat length and color. Treatment plans begin with a “loading” dose of daily treatments and then decrease over time to “maintenance” dosing, which may occur once to twice a week depending on the patient. Although treatments may occasionally be performed as a single episode, regenerative laser therapy is most effective when applied cumulatively over time.
General treatment: Infections, tendon strains, arthritis, fractures, wounds, ear infections, urinary bladder pain, inflammatory bowel disease and intervertebral disc disease (back pain or “slipped disc”).
Surgical treatment: All patients undergoing surgical procedures in our hospital receive a regenerative laser treatment immediately after surgery to reduce pain at the incision site, with the exception of cancer removal and eye surgery. Continuing regenerative laser therapy is often recommended to promote healing and reduce pain in patients undergoing orthopedic procedures such as fracture repair, limb amputation and cranial cruciate repair. Therapy is generally prescribed daily during the initial hospital stay and then reduced over the following six to eight weeks.
Chronic Conditions: Regenerative Laser therapy is extremely helpful in treating chronic conditions such as degenerative joint disease (arthritis), tendonitis and other chronically painful diseases. It is also a critical component to rehabilitation and physical therapy programs. Regenerative laser therapy is an important part of a complete treatment plan and often reduces the frequency of pain medications.
Once a treatment or rehabilitation plan has been prescribed by our veterinarian, individual treatments may be completed by one of our trained veterinary technicians on an outpatient basis.
